Congratulations to the GWUOHS Winner of the 2024 K12 Photography Competition

  • 11/20/2024

The 2024 K12 Photography Competition boasted more than 12,000 entries from talented students across the nation. Among those were 67 entries from our very own students at George Washington University Online High School.

This annual competition celebrates the artistic skills of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and provides a platform for them to showcase their unique perspectives through the lens of a camera.

A total of $20,000 in cash prizes were awarded to this year’s winners! In each grade level, the 1st place winner received $1,000, the 2nd place winner took home $500, and the People’s Choice winner—selected through public voting—earned $100.

We’re incredibly proud of every student who participated, whether as a first-time competitor or a seasoned photographer. Even more exciting, we’re thrilled to announce that one of our very own students from George Washington University Online High School earned a top spot in this year’s competition!

Join us in congratulating this exceptional young photographer.

Aimee

1st Place, 12th Grade

I photographed the decoration butterflies hanging from an airport in Texas because I loved the perspective I had looking at them from below, and the symmetry that I could capture. It also made me compare the butterflies to people: whenever I moved from the end of one string of butterflies to the next, I felt as if each was its own center… just like people, who are the center of their own lives. We just have to understand other’s perspectives. And on top of that, seeing the butterflies in every direction made me think about all the different trajectories we have in our lives, more literally in an airport, but in life everyone has their own way to travel, and we might just cross paths with other butterflies once in life before we fly away, so let’s appreciate others.”

We couldn’t be prouder of Aimee for her incredible achievements in this year’s competition. Aimee’s unique vision and dedication truly shined in this photograph, and we can’t wait to see how she continues to evolve and flourish as an artist.

At George Washington University Online High School, we’re committed to providing opportunities for our students to explore their talents and passions. The success of our participants in the K12 Photography Competition is a true testament to that. We can’t wait to see even more inspiring entries in future competitions!
