The George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS) is an independent private school for academically talented students in grades 8–12 who seek a rigorous yet flexible college preparatory program and are motivated to prepare for a life in which they can contribute significantly, responsibly, and respectfully in a global society.

Our Partnership with The George Washington University

The vision of GWUOHS was to create a premier online middle and high school designed to provide a personalized educational experience that prepares students for success in high school, college, and life. GWUOHS is a partnership between The George Washington University—a prestigious national university located in Washington, D.C.—and K12, the foremost provider of online education for grades K–12 in the U.S. and around the world. Both organizations are committed to delivering world-class, individualized education with the singular goal of helping each student reach their true personal potential.

The outcome of this partnership is a college preparatory, independent online middle and high school that delivers a rigorous, engaging education emphasizing theory and practice and integrity.

GWUOHS Meet and Greet is held each fall on the GW Foggy Bottom campus. Students and families can tour the GW campus, meet with our GWUOHS assigned admissions advisor, meet with other GWUOHS students and faculty, and enjoy lunch together.

High-Quality Curriculum

Our engaging, interactive curriculum has received numerous awards and is designed by some of the finest minds in education. Our teachers are selected based on deep expertise in their disciplines and are trained to teach online and provide individual attention to each of our students.

GWUOHS uses the curriculum developed over the past ten years by K12. All courses meet or exceed national and state standards that align with broadly accepted curricular best practices. K12 has curriculum experts who continually review and improve course content as standards change and evolve. Adaptability is a distinct advantage: our curriculum is flexible, so we can update it quickly, unlike traditional brick-and-mortar schools that rely on textbooks. As a result, GWUOHS is ahead of the curve in curriculum development.

In addition to the ability to create and maintain superior content quality, the K12 curriculum uses technology for an engaging, interactive experience. The courses are composed of carefully sequenced lessons that ensure student mastery as they make their way through each course. The educational environment has students engaged in a mix of teacher-led (synchronous) and online lessons (nonsynchronous).

Opportunities for Academic Challenges

GWUOHS students are given the opportunity to work toward mastery levels of learning to suit their educational interests. For example, we offer AP® courses that are College Board approved, as well as intellectually challenging honors courses.

The GWUOHS Student Experience

GWUOHS students work with each other, instructors, counselors, and academic advisors to achieve their goals. Beyond academics, students also engage in multiple clubs, share their interests, passions, and ideas, and support each other through online discussions and group projects. The success of this school will be evident every day in the academic stimulation that students experience as they are challenged to reach their highest potential and follow our school’s honor code.
